Character design - Lesson 1 - Time period/ style exercise and Caricature
For our first character design lesson with Justin we looked at how clothing, furniture and weapons variety in look depending on the time period.
At the start of the lesson we were all given a time period to look into and were told to sketch items of clothing, furniture and weapons from that time. My time period was Piracy.
I decided to look at reference images for a gun, cutlass, chest and a female pirate outfit.
We then began to look at caricature and how the items could change in size and shaping depending on which character is using the item. I looked at enlarging the guard on the cutlass and the length of the blade. Justin suggested to look the the shaping of the blade and how the guard could change in style.
For the last part of the lesson Justin then showed us examples of caricature in animals and humans. We were then told to use a reference image of either a human or animal and then enhance the features that seemed most noticeable. I found the image below online and I believed that the lady's nose and ears were fairly large compared to the rest of her face so I chose these features to enlarge.
