Character design - Lesson 7 - Storytelling

For the first part of the character design lesson we spoke about story boarding, camera angles and positioning and how each of these things can effect the emotion and characters in the different shots.

For the first exercise we were told to draw some quick storyboard sketches of the different shots used from a small scene in a film that we like. I chose to look at the film BeetleJuice, specifically the scene where the two main characters Adam and Lydia and asking Beetlejuice whether he is able to teach them how to be scary.

For the second exercise we were each given a location where we were then told to create a chase scene and draw out the shots for the scene. I was given a Stadium. I created a chase scene between an MI5 agent and a bomber as they run through the busy stadium as the crowds are beginning to be seated. I also created another agent character in a helicopter that was assisting the other agent by helping to locate the bomber.

I spoke to Justin about my idea and he liked how I had arranged the story and the shots but believed I should have had the bomber setting up the bomb and getting ready to ignite it so create more suspense. Making the scene more like a hide and seek story rather than a physical chase. He also suggested that maybe the agent in the helicopter could navigate the agent in the stadium to an area where the bomber is but it turns out that the agent has got confused and has gone to a similar looking area. He also suggested about the agent looking and locating the bomber as the bomber is running over the other side of the stadium.

I decided to speak to Justin and we came up with an idea for the storyboard for the character design project. We decided that Centi-Pete will barge into the Saloon trying to cause destruction and havoc in the town. The sheriff then tries to get up and fight hm but he then falls on the floor drunk, causing Boxell to step in. Boxell confronts him but then Centi-Pete shows his full scale and Boxell becomes terrified.
