'What if?' Metropolis - Maya buildings

Image
Here are some images of the buildings that I have created using Maya. I have not added a lot of detail onto the buildings yet as I am using Maya to test how I can create the structure of the buildings.  I am working on how to ensure that the curved edges in this building remain curved when the image is rendered.

Film review - The Shining (1980)

Image
Figure 1. The Shining Movie Poster (1980) Released in 1980 and directed by Stanley Kubrick, ' The Shining' is a film about a family that move to 'The Overlook Hotel' in Colorado in order for Jack Torrance (The father of the family who is played by Jack Nicholson) to work as a caretaker while the hotel is isolated for five months during the winter break. In his job interview, Jack is briefly warned about a murder that happened in the hotel between the caretaker and his family. Jack then explains that nothing like that would happen between him and his family to which the evil spirits within the hotel fight back, causing for Jack  to go insane. Figure 2.  The Shining  (1980) Throughout the film, Kubrick uses sound to create more tension.  "The result is gloriously precision-made. The use of sound especially (listen to the remarkable rhythm of silence then clatter set up by Danny pedaling his trike intermittently over carpet then wooden floor.)"  (N

Life drawing - Lesson 9

Image
Here are my life drawing pieces from last week's life drawing class.  In this exercise we were given 20 minutes to create our pieces. In this piece I used different shades of green and yellow pastels to show tone. I also used red pastel to express the colour of the model's bowtie and wig. I used a water brush to blend the pastels. In this exercise we drew six quick sketches of the model and were given between 1 and 4 minutes to complete each of them. I used red, green and yellow pastel in this exercise to show the shaping, highlights and low lights on the model as well as green pastel to show the hoop.  This is my final piece from the session. We were given around 40 minutes to complete a study of the model to show how the use of light helps with defining the body. I used a variety of different coloured pastels for this piece. I think that this piece is successful as it is in proportion and it is easy to understand where the light hits the model's body.

Life drawing - Lesson 8

Image
Here are my life drawings from our life drawing class the other week. I completed this piece using two different shades of orange pastels and a blue pastel. I selected the blue pastel fro the piece in order to create a bigger contrast in colour. I used a water brush so that the colours were able to easily blended together. In this exercise I used a marker pen to create the bold pen strokes. I created some nice pieces using continuous line and by focusing on the shaping of the model rather than just the outline.

'What if?' Metropolis - Definitive influence map

Image
Here is the definitive influence map for the 'What if? Metropolis' project for my city 'Lalo'.

'What if?' Metropolis - City features orthographic drawings

Image
Here is the orthographic drawings of the spit roast that is located towards the front left of the final digital concept painting.    Here is the orthographic drawings of the thimble that is used to collect water from the tap that is located to the right hand side of every additional water collection building. Here is the orthographic drawing for the slides within the city. A black background has been used so that the transparent glass is easy to see.

'What if?@ Metropolis - Building orthographic drawings

Here is the orthographic drawings for the city's entertainment buildings. Here is the orthographic drawings  for the city's additional water collection buildings.   Here is the orthographic drawings  for the city's light production buildings.   Here is the orthographic drawings  for the city's nature church buildings.   Here is the orthographic drawings  for the city's Provence rose protection building. The building has glass thorns surrounding it to imitate the rose's thorns inside it.

'What if?' Metropolis - Cityscape thumbnails

I've decided, with the help of Jordan, that some buildings within my city should be shaped and coloured differently depending on their use. This would allow for the buildings to stand out as well as adopt the glass colours from my artist Dale Chihuly. In 'Lalo' the main feature within the city is the Provence roses at its centre which are encased in glass. Jordan suggested that perhaps the glass surrounding the roses could have a more organic shaping and perhaps replicate certain features of the stem such as the thorns. He also suggested that as the roses were pink, maybe the glass could be coloured the same. He also told me to consider how each of the buildings I am creating could be constructed. I chose for each of the glass buildings to be constructed using small glass panels as it would be easier to create the small curves within the structures. I then considered what other things may be needed in the city, so I looked at how the inhabitants would be able

Here are the newer building thumbnails I have created. Using Phil's advice I have created tower like buildings using the shapes that I had previously used in my other silhouette thumbnails.

'What if?' Metropolis - Glass colouring research

Image
In order for the city of 'Lalo' to be easier to understand, I have researched into glass colouring and how this would relate to the construction of the city's buildings. In this part of my research I have looked into the different natural components that are used when colouring glass. I found that copper components can create red, green and blue coloured glass, carbon oxides can give glass an amber or brown colour and lead components create a yellow colour.  I then looked into what everyday items are found to have copper components, carbon oxides and lead components in them. From this I then found that most of the objects can be recycled and therefore found at recycling centres. This links to the travelogue that I created for 'Lalo' as the inhabitants travel to a bottle bank in order to find glass and most bottle banks are in recycling centres.  I then looked into how glass can be coloured. I realised that certain aspects such as the Aceto

'What if?' Metropolis - Thumbnails 91 - 108 and reference silhouettes

Here is a reference for organic shapes that I created in Photoshop. Working in this way has allowed for me to be productive and create new building shapes at a quicker rate with a variety of different outcomes. Here are my 91 - 108 thumbnails. I believe that working with silhouettes as enabled me to create more organically shaped buildings.

@Phil 'What if?' Metropolis - Thumbnails 76 - 90

Image
Here are my 76 to 90 thumbnails that I have created using my updated influence map. Using Phil's feedback I have looked more into how the buildings could be designed more organically. I've also considered what the inhabitants could use to access the higher buildings as well as how the buildings would be able to remain in position.

Life drawing - Lesson 7

Image
Here are my drawings from this week's life drawing class. For the first pose we were 10 minutes to study the model. For this exercise I used a charcoal stick and water for the main figure. I then used bright orange and yellow pastels for the highlights. I think this drawing was successful but I need to look more into the model's proportions. For the second exercise we were told to draw 8 studies of the model. Each study took between 1 and 4 minutes to complete. I used a marker pen for this exercise. For the final exercise we had to draw the model whilst she was moving. I found this task quite difficult as I'm used to drawing models while they remain posed which is why some of the drawings seem disproportionate, but after looking at the studies once I had finished the exercise, I rather liked the collection of studies together.

@Phil 'What if?' Metropolis - Refined influence map

Image
After receiving feedback from my first  OGR on the 'What if?' Metropolis project, I've looked into buildings who's shaping has been influenced by the natural form. I have also included other images that I believe would be relevant in creating my metropolis, such as some of my artist Dale Chihuly's sculptors, the environment I wish for my metropolis to set in and images of different colours of glass which would be used in the creation of my metropolis' buildings.

Film review - King Kong (1933)

Image
Figure 1 - King Kong Movie Poster (1933) Released in 1933 and directed by Ernest Scheodsack and Merian C. Cooper the original ' King Kong' film has played a huge role in inf luencing modern horror and adventure based films such as Ridley Scott's ' Alien'. In the time it was created, the movie was seen as jaw dropping do to its use of stop frame animation for creating Kong and matt e paintings for the location's backgrounds. Other experimental techniques were also used in the making of the movie in order to 'wow' its audience and make the scenario seem as realistic as possible.  ' King Kong' is a movie that shows a film maker's adventure into an unexplored island that is said to be inhabited by a large ape like creature in which he hopes to film and create a successful movie from with the assistance of a sexualised but beautiful Fay Wray as the leading female and many other male actors helping to explore the island.
