'What if?' Metropolis - OGR presentation

'What if?' Metropolis - Thumbnails 27 - 75

Image
Here are my 27 - 75 thumbnail drawings. After my feedback from Phil I looked into Dale Chihuly's painting style as well as his sculptors and incorporated both of these styles into my thumbnail designs. I created these thumbnails using  coloured inks and brio pen.

@Phil 'What if?' Metropolis - Thumbnails 1 - 26

Image
Here are my first 26 thumbnails for my 'What if?' Metropolis city project. I have chosen to call my city 'Lalo' and each of the drawings of the structures within the city have been inspired by the organic designs shown throughout my artist, Dale Chihuly's, work.

'What if?' Metropolis - Artist research - Dale Chihuly

Image
The artist that I am collaborating with on this project is Dale Chihuly . Chihuly is a glass sculptor who was born in Tacoma, Washington, in the United States. Chihuly's work is inspired by his fascination of botanical gardens. He uses the organic shaping of different plants to design and create glass sculptors and installations of which he exhibits in botanical gardens and museums worldwide.  Shown in the influence map above are images of Chihuly's work. I have looked at each of the images and made notes on Chihuly's influences for each piece, the colours that he uses and sharpness of the edges. I will look at this influence map while creating my thumbnails.

Lesson 05 - Animation - Halloween animation

Image
In today's animation class we were told to create a Halloween animation that included all of the techniques that we had learnt in our previous animation classes. Below is the animation that I created: In the animation we were told to include arcs, to show weight, to use the squash and stretch technique, to use timing and spacing correctly in the animation and to look at layers and depth within the environment. In the animation, when the doll's head is about to reattach to its body I incorporated an arc. I believed that using it in this part of the animation added to the effect that the head is floating and finding it difficult to attach itself back onto the body. When the doll's head falls off of its shoulders I made sure to think about weight of the doll's head to help with timing. As the doll's head is heavy I made sure that the head would reach the floor quickly. I also used the squash and stretch technique subtly when the doll's head hits the f

Life drawing - Lesson 6

Image
Here are my life drawings from this week's life drawing class. For the first exercise we were given 10 minutes for each study of the model. I used blue ink and water to create each response. For the second exercise we were given 30 minutes to create our next response. For this I used blue ink for the shadows, yellow ink for the highlights and orange ink for the mid-tone. For the third and final response we were given another 30 minutes. For this I continued with using blue, orange and yellow ink but incorporated fine liner into the environment. This was so that it is easy to understand where and how the model was placed and it also meant that due its lack of colour, the environment did not draw attention away from the model.

Digital painting - Production design

Image
In our digital painting lesson we were told to choose a piece of paper from one box, which was to do with an everyday object, and another box that was to do with either an animal or plant. From the boxes I selected 'lizard' and 'wardrobe' which meant that I needed to create a wardrobe inspired by a lizard. For this I chose to research into horned lizards, because of their interesting shaped horns, and antique wardrobes, due to their style and the materials used to construct them. I then created an influence map from the images that I found. Influence map After creating the influence map, I then looked into the wood material of the wardrobe and the texture on the lizard. From this, I then creating drawings.  From then I then started to create thumbnail sketches of different wardrobe ideas that were inspired by a lizard. I then selected thumbnail number 2 and progressed it further by adding colour and texture to the design. I linked this

Life drawing - Lesson 5

Image
For our first exercise we were given 20 minutes to complete a response to the model with a material of our choice. I chose ink and water again this week as I like the style that I am able to produce with it. As shown, I struggled with proportions.  For this exercise  we were given 5 minutes for each drawing. Our model positioned himself in 5 different poses so that they represented him competing and winning a race. For this exercise I used blue pastel on black paper as I liked the contrast. In the final exercise we were told to focus on the model's facial expressions and on the props that the model was wearing. We were given 10 minutes to complete each response. For this exercise I wanted to experiment further with black ink and water as I found the effect that the water leaves when mixed with the ink very interesting.

Film review - Metropolis (1927)

Image
Fig 1 - Original Metropolis Poster Released in 1927 and directed by Fritz Lang, 'Metropolis' is one of the most influential films for modern Science-Fiction today, having used the biggest budget in German film making at the time. From the character and set design to the plot, many elements from this film can be spotted throughout a variety of modern films such as 'The Matrix' and 'Blade Runner'. 'Metropolis'   is a film based on a divided city set in the distant future where both the working and upper class live separate lives in different parts of the city. For the upper class, they are provided with high skyscrapers,  Eternal gardens, a district dedicated to entertainment, various methods of transport and many more, while the lower class are subjected to working continuously, enslaved below the city in machine halls and living in small, mundane buildings. Monster character design - Preppy monster 3

Image
Here are my front, side and back views of my monster. In order to create these, I imported my drawn image from Adobe illustrator onto Adobe Photoshop where I was then able to create the side and back views of the character. Front view Side view Back view

Monster character design - Preppy monster 2

Image
After selecting my final monster design, I then scanned my A3 design onto the computer and imported the image to Adobe Illustrator. By doing this I was able to place the image on a layer below a drawing layer which allowed for me to trace the outline of the character and create a digital copy of the image. Once I had completed outlining my monster design I then moved on to adding colour to my image. For this, I created a new layer and placed it below the layer which consisted of my character's outline. This enabled me to be able to colour the image and then, if I needed to at any point, remove the colour and be left with the character's outline.  Once I had completed colouring my character, I then moved onto creating multiple versions of it in a variety of colours to show how I would be able to make different types of my character if necessary. After completing creating different versions of my character, I then moved onto adding shading to my original c

Lesson 04 - Animation - Adobe Animate

Image
In this session we continued to look at the movement of circular characters in motion and how another object attached to the character could also be effected by its movement.  The first character I created was a hedgehog. I focused on the hedgehog's spikes and how they would move while the hedgehog hits the floor and spins around. As the hedgehog is a living creature it means that it squashes when it hits the surface and stretches when it bounces back.  The second animation I created was of a tassel attached to a ball. Just like the first example, the ball also squashes when it hit the ground due to the material it is made from. As the tassel is a separate object to the ball and is only attached by one point, the tassel is able to move in different directions as it is pulled by the primary object which is the ball. For my final character I created a rabbit with floppy ears. The character is living so it still follows the same squash style when it hits the surface,

Lesson 03 - Animation - Adobe Animate

Image
In this session we were introduced to looking at how balls of different weights would bounce within an environment.  For the first exercise we looked at how a soft ball would bounce in an arc motion when moving to the right. We also found that when the ball hits the floor it becomes squashed due to the ball's weight and the momentum that is behind it. In the next exercise we then looked at the different weights of three different balls and how this would affect the height that each ball bounced. The ball on the left is a ping-pong ball which is small and has a hard surface, meaning that it is able to bounce higher as it has less weight to slow it down. The ball in the centre is a tennis ball. Tennis balls are soft but hollow which allows the ball to squash on impact, allowing it to bounce but not as high as the ping-pong ball. This is as more energy is absorbed by the ball. The final ball on the right is a bowling ball. Bowling balls are larger than both the ping-pong ba

Life drawing - Lesson 4

Here is the first three quick studies that I completed using black ink and a water pen. We were given 10 minutes to complete each study.  Here are my 10 studies, each of which I completed in 1 minute. For this study I use blue ink. This is my final study that took 20 minutes to complete. For this study I used both blue and red ink to experiment with the light and dark areas on the model's body.

Life drawing - Lesson 3

Image
Here is a 20 minute life drawing sketch that I created on white water colour paper using a graphite stick and red and blue coloured pencils. As always, with my first life drawings in the session, my drawing was disproportionate, as shown in the legs and upper body. I did find this exercise beneficial as I was able to use the blue for darker and the red for lighter tones on the body. I was also able to use the direction of the colour to imply that the model is three dimensional.   Here is a 20 minute life drawing that I created on black paper using three different coloured pastels. I found that using three different shades was very beneficial as it allowed me to use a neutral colour as well as a colour for highlights and shadows. Here are my final 10 small sketches from today's life drawing session. Each sketch was completed in between 1 and 5 minutes and was created using a light coloured pastel on black paper. These are my favourite sketches from today as I wa
