From script to screen - Character design - Villain and other scientists

Image
Here are some of my character designs for both the villain and other scientists within my story. I haven't decided yet on which of these characters below will be my villain and which of the other characters will be the other scientists. I have also experimented with different eyes for each of the characters to see which I'd prefer.  For these designs I created the skin colours using acrylic paint and then used black Biro pen and coloured pencils to add more details and facial features.

From script to screen - OGR feedback

Image
After having my first OGR for my 'From script to screen' project and listening to Phil's advice, I have decided to add more and change parts to the story that I had originally come up with. Here is the new story below: Act One: Here I will introduce evil brain surgeon 'Hugo Brantly' (the villain) and make it seem as though Brantly is a normal brain surgeon, this will be done by opening the animation with Brantly looking as though he has just finished performing a brain surgery to a patient. It will then move onto the audience being shown  part of a news bulletin on TV saying that many famous scientists from around the world have gone missing and missing persons cases have been opened for them all. The camera will then show Brantly smirking so that the audience start to become suspicious of Brantly and how he may be linked to the missing scientists. The camera then moves to Brantly walking into the Hospital basement where we are then shown his lair and this

Life drawing - Lesson 13

Image
Here is my first life drawing from today, I used a pink biro to complete the studies. We were given  5 minutes to draw each pose in the model's turn around. Here is my second drawing from today. This study took 20 minutes. I used chalk on black paper to experiment with shadow and texture. Here is my final study. This study took 20 minutes. I used water and charcoal to experiment further with shadows.

For this lesson we were told to animate a ball being thrown without reference images, here's my animation:

Character design - Lesson 3

Image
For the first half of the lesson we were told to design weapons for a well known character as if they were going into battle. I chose Ralph from ' Wreck-It Ralph '. These are the first weapon design ideas that I came up with. My first weapon was a knuckle duster with a spiked wrecking ball attached. Once I'd spoken to Justin, I then reconsidered the design and left it as just a spiked wrecking ball attached to a chain in which Ralph would wrap around his arm. I then thought about giving Ralph a grapple shooter but then thought that it would not fit in with his character or style.  I then decided to draw three m ore weapon ideas on was a larger hammer that Ralph could use to hit other people. I also thought about Ralph having a 'brick belt' so that he could throw bricks at people. I then moved onto a petrol bomb as Ralph is considered as an almost hill billy character and hill billies create moonshine. For the second half of the lesson, we then loo

Film review - Psycho (1960)

Image
Figure 1. Psycho film poster Released in 1960 and directed by the great Alfred Hitchcock, Psycho is a Thriller about Marion Crane (Janet Leigh) , a young secretary, who is on the run after stealing $40,000 from a client at work. After trading in her car for a new one Marion continues to get away from Phoenix, Arizona until, due to heavy rain, she has to pull over at a motel and stay the night until the storm passes. Here is where she meets and starts speaking to Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) , the owner of the motel. Subsequently after speaking to Norman, Marion is murdered. Not hearing from her sister in days, Lila Crane (Vera Miles) sparks a missing persons case calling on a private investigator to try and find her sister. Tracing Marion to the 'Bate's Motel' private investigator Milton Arbogast (Martin Balsam) finds that the murderer must be in Norman's house, Arbogast is then also murdered by what looks to be Norman's psychotic mother. It is then la

From script to screen - Step Outline

I am struggling with the step outline but this is what I have so far: Italics - Sound Normal text - Camera movements Characters:  Hugo Brantly - Surgeon who likes to steal pieces of his patient's brain Lewis Drager - Doctor who thinks Drager is up to something and is trying to stop him while in surgery  Patient - Being operated on Location: Surgery room - Where the operation is taking place Hospital corridor - Where Drager jogs down while opening doors, trying to find Brantly Object: Brain - working like a battery inside the body, Brantly needs pieces of the brain  ----------------------------------------------------------- Start: Scene opens with camera at floor level filming a hospital door opening and Drager's foot exiting the door (towards the camera) Close-up t racking shot (camera looking up) following Drager opening (double) hospital doors looking for Brantly Heart beat  Camera then switches to the surgery room - Medium long shot of Bra

Film review - Rope (1948)

Image
Figure 1. Rope film poster Released in 1948 and directed by Alfred Hitchcock 'Rope' is a film well known for its seamless transitions and Hitchcock's clever use of giving the audience more information to create tension.  The whole film is set in one location, which is the apartment of Philip Morgon (Farley Granger) and Brandon Shaw (John Dall). This causes the viewer to feel claustrophobic as it is like they are unable to escape what is happening in the scene and are watching everything unfold before their eyes.  Figure 2. Mrs Wilson clearing the chest Figure 3. Mrs Wilson and Rupert opening the chest As Hitchcock has made the film seem seamless as though it is unfolding before the eyes of the viewer, the viewer is able to collect information from each character, making it as though the viewer is omniscient which in turn creates more tension.  'Hitchcock's camera was loaded with 10-minute reels, and had to duck behind an actor's back,

Maya Tutorials - Car animation, rocket ship animation, robot moving and chain link

From script to screen - Initial location and object design

Image
Here is my initial idea for the location in which the story will be set. In the story the main character is a brain surgeon who is operating on a patient so I believed that having the main location as a surgery room would be suitable. I then moved on to look at how I was going to draw the object in the story which is a battery. In order for the whole story to link and after speaking to Phil I looked into the brain being a battery in the story as the brain powers the whole body, like a battery would power a toy. I then looked into which parts of the brain retain information and intelligence to see which part of the brain Hugo Brantly would extract from his patients. After researching I believe that a piece from the patient's frontal lobe would be best.

From Script to screen - Premise and Logline

The premise After months of patients coming out of surgery in a worse condition and believing that a newly recruited brain surgeon is up to something, one doctor realises that you shouldn't trust everybody. The logline Hugo Brantly is a brain surgeon well known around the world for his unknown but  successful methods  of curing patients that are in need of brain surgery. After Brantly  moves  to the  hospital and  patients continuing  to encounter problems after surgery,  doctor Lewis Drager decides to surprise Brantly by walking in unexpectedly on one of his surgeries. He then finds that Brantly is in fact stealing pieces of each patient's brain in order become super knowledgeable and more successful.

Character design - Lesson 2

Image
For the first half of the lesson we were taught about how the shaping and spacing of a character can cause for them to be perceived differently by an audience. We were then given a group of characters to design, looking at their shaping and how that effects the character overall.  The group that I was given was 'Space Trooper'. I created a collection of  character drawings.  Below are some of the drawings that I then proceeded to design further:   Here are the developed drawings: I also created a new character based on a different character. Once we had completed that exercise, we then moved onto looking at character silhouettes and how if a character has a detailed and interesting silhouette, then the character will be interesting. I was given the group 'Medieval Gothic' and I created two silhouettes: Here is a silhouette of a dark priest that I created. I was told that in order to make the silhouette and therefore t

Maya Tutorials - camera angles - Distance and tracking shot, Coverage shots

Distance and tracking shots Here are some distance and tracking shots of two people exchanging money that I was able to film using Maya: Here is a close up tracking shot. Here is a medium close up tracking shot. Here is a long tracking shot. Coverage shots Here are some coverage shots that I took of a simulated car crash using Maya: This is the crash from the road that the red car originally speeds down. This is the crash from the side of the road where the crash occurs.  These are camera angles from the front of the car, showing the car while it is speeding and when it crashes.

@Phil From script to screen - Updated story ideas

Image
Here is an updated version of my bubble map of story ideas that I have created from the three words that were given to me. Character: Pirate Location: Hospital Object: Battery I believe that the strongest story idea that I currently have is where a brain surgeon is acting like a pirate by stealing pieces of each of his patient's brains. I believe that this idea successfully relates to all of the components that I was given, this is as the brain surgeon is acting like a pirate by taking something that does belong to him, the story would be able to be successfully located in a hospital and the brain acts like a battery within the human body. While writing down my story ideas I also explored the character not being human. I believe that a Magpie could have also been a good idea for a character as they like to steal both other birds nests and shiny objects, both of which do not belong to them.

Life drawing - Lesson 11

Image
Here is my first drawing from today's life drawing session. We were given 20 minutes to draw the model. I used a blue felt tip pen and green and yellow highlighter. Here are my 10 line drawings. We were given between 1 and 4 minutes to complete each of them. I used a black biro to complete this exercise. These are my 10 minute drawings which were drawn within the space of 30 minutes. I used biro to complete them. These are my favourite line drawings from today's life drawing session:

From Script to Screen - Story Components

Image
Character: Pirate Location: Hospital Object: Battery Once I had received the different components that I had been given for my 'From Script to Screen' project I then created a bubble map of different story lines I could follow.  Here are the ideas that I came up with. I think that my favourite story line at the moment is where the Pirate is actually a surgeon on call for work while at a fancy dress party who then gets called into work at the hospital. This is as I believe I could then make the animation comical.
