Character design - Lesson 7 - Storytelling

Image
For the first part of the character design lesson we spoke about story boarding, camera angles and positioning and how each of these things can effect the emotion and characters in the different shots.  For the first exercise we were told to draw some quick storyboard sketches of the different shots used from a small scene in a film that we like. I chose to look at the film BeetleJuice, specifically the scene where the two main characters Adam and Lydia and asking Beetlejuice whether he is able to teach them how to be scary. For the second exercise we were each given a location where we were then told to create a chase scene and draw out the shots for the scene. I was given a Stadium. I created a chase scene between an MI5 agent and a bomber as they run through the busy stadium as the crowds are beginning to be seated. I also created another agent character in a helicopter that was assisting the other agent by helping to locate the bomber.  I spoke to Justin abou

Character design - Lesson 6 - Side kicks

Image
For the first part of the lesson with Justin, we looked at side kicks and weapons. Justin then gave each of us a civilization to look at and then were told to create weapons from that era in a futuristic style. I was given ancient Japan so I focused on throwing stars, etc. Justin said that he liked my design ideas but suggested to look at ancient Japanese artwork to help with the style influence. He also suggested looking at making the weapons with more curves.  For my character design project, I decided to create Sheriff B-Tell as the side kick, rather than Boxell because Boxell comes in to save the day.

Character design - Lesson 5 - Facial expressions

Image
For the first half of the lesson we looked at character's facial expressions and how they can help to portray emotions. Each of us were given a hybrid of two emotions that we were told to try and draw. I was given sadness and fear and created a story about a character feeling sadness and fear about his friend who has just died and turned into a zombie. Justin liked my idea but believed I needed to look more at the character's eyebrows, eyes and posture to make the character seem more frightened. For the second part of the lesson we were given an object and told to create a face from the object and show the character's emotion. I was given a dashboard. I created the character's eyes using some of the air vents in the car and looked at creating the character's mouth through the radio. Justin liked my idea and suggested focusing on different parts of the dashboard as well. Below are some expressions that I created for my characters in my character

Mad Max Fury Road (2015) Review - Exploitation

Image
Figure 1. Movie poster Mad Max: Fury Road is a science fiction, fantasy film that was created in 2015 and directed by Australian director George Miller. In the film Max (Tom Hardy), a man who keeps having flash backs of his dead daughter, is held captive by a civilization who harvests his blood in order to feed their warriors. After a couple of attempts to break free Max is tied to a battle vehicle and is continued to be used as a blood bag while one of the civilians known as Nux (Nicholas Hoult) drives into battle, trying to stop Furiosa (Charlize Theron) from fleeing with the city's 'breeders'. One of the main types of exploitation shown in the film is Ozploitation. Ozploitation is the exploitation of Australian film and film making. " The main requirement for an Ozploitation film is that it simply be an Australian genre film."  (Grindhousedatabase.com, 2018) In the film sexploitation is also used in multiple ways. Sexploitation is "the commerci

B. Movie - King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962) - Film review

Figure 1. Movie poster King Kong vs. Godzilla is a 1962 science fiction, fantasy B-Movie set in Japan, directed by Ishiro Honda. In the movie Mr.Tako, a pharmaceutical business man, dislikes the companies that his company is advertising. An employee tells Mr.Tako about a monster that has been found on a remote Island and Mr.Tako then finds the monster and brings it back in order to help his business become more successful. At the same time in America a ship hits an iceberg which releases Godzilla. They are both then transported to Japan where they start to fight each other. King Kong vs. Godzilla is considered a B-Movie due to many different characteristics. One of the main characteristics shown in the film is that it uses low budget special effects. The special effects are shown throughout the film through the use of small location models and remote controlled vehicles. People dressed in costumes and paper mache masks are also used throughout the film to play the Godzilla and K

Life drawing - Lesson 4

Image
For the first exercise we were given 1 minute to draw each of the poses. I created these drawings using a graphite stick. For the second exercise  we were given 5 minutes to draw. Here I used a graphite stick. I like this drawing because I think that the body is drawn to the correct proportions.  With the third drawing we were given 10 minutes to complete it. Here I used a biro. I like this drawing because it looks realistic and I like the style. In the fourth, fifth and sixth drawing we were given 20 minutes to complete each of them. I continued to use biro in all of the drawings because I liked the effect that I was creating. I believe that in some of the drawings my proportions are incorrect but I still like how realistic the model's face and the textures on the materials look.

Non-diegetic sounds such as music are not used.  Figure 2. George Junior's death A estheticization of violence  - In the film the family's Son, George Junior, is shot in the head with a shot gun. Although the death isn't shown in the film, blood is shown splattered across the TV, which was is next to George Junior, implying that the death was violent and fast. After the death, a pool of blood is shown to quickly expand from beneath his corpse. Figure 3. Son death scene  Realistic timings - Once George Junior has been murdered the film's story almost begins to slow down, this is as it shows both parent's a

Moulin Rouge (2001) - Postmodernism

Image
Figure 1. Movie poster Non-linear narrative -  The film starts by Christian explaining that the love of his life has died. The film then cuts back to before she has died and what has happened up to the first scene that we see is shown. Figure 2. Christian and Satine dancing on clouds above Paris Hyper realism - Throughout the film characters interact with the surrounding set in ways that would be impossible in reality.  One example of this is when Christian (Ewan McGregor ) and Satine (Nichole Kidman) step out onto clouds and begin to dance above the city of Paris. Mashup - As the film is a musical different songs are heard throughout the film. Each of the songs used were modern for the time the film was released but did not relate to 1899 which was the year that the movie was set. Due to this, the modern songs had been adapted to make them suit the time period but they are still very noticeable by the audience. Creativity - During the first 15 minutes or so of the fi
