From script to screen - Initial location and object design

Image
Here is my initial idea for the location in which the story will be set. In the story the main character is a brain surgeon who is operating on a patient so I believed that having the main location as a surgery room would be suitable. I then moved on to look at how I was going to draw the object in the story which is a battery. In order for the whole story to link and after speaking to Phil I looked into the brain being a battery in the story as the brain powers the whole body, like a battery would power a toy. I then looked into which parts of the brain retain information and intelligence to see which part of the brain Hugo Brantly would extract from his patients. After researching I believe that a piece from the patient's frontal lobe would be best.

Here are the newer building thumbnails I have created. Using Phil's advice I have created tower like buildings using the shapes that I had previously used in my other silhouette thumbnails.

@Phil 'What if?' Metropolis - Thumbnails 76 - 90

Here are my 76 to 90 thumbnails that I have created using my updated influence map. Using Phil's feedback I have looked more into how the buildings could be designed more organically. I've also considered what the inhabitants could use to access the higher buildings as well as how the buildings would be able to remain in position.

Life drawing - Lesson 7

Image
Here are my drawings from this week's life drawing class. For the first pose we were 10 minutes to study the model. For this exercise I used a charcoal stick and water for the main figure. I then used bright orange and yellow pastels for the highlights. I think this drawing was successful but I need to look more into the model's proportions. For the second exercise we were told to draw 8 studies of the model. Each study took between 1 and 4 minutes to complete. I used a marker pen for this exercise. For the final exercise we had to draw the model whilst she was moving. I found this task quite difficult as I'm used to drawing models while they remain posed which is why some of the drawings seem disproportionate, but after looking at the studies once I had finished the exercise, I rather liked the collection of studies together.

'What if?' Metropolis - Thumbnails 27 - 75

Image
Here are my 27 - 75 thumbnail drawings. After my feedback from Phil I looked into Dale Chihuly's painting style as well as his sculptors and incorporated both of these styles into my thumbnail designs. I created these thumbnails using  coloured inks and brio pen.

Digital painting - Production design

Image
In our digital painting lesson we were told to choose a piece of paper from one box, which was to do with an everyday object, and another box that was to do with either an animal or plant. From the boxes I selected 'lizard' and 'wardrobe' which meant that I needed to create a wardrobe inspired by a lizard. For this I chose to research into horned lizards, because of their interesting shaped horns, and antique wardrobes, due to their style and the materials used to construct them. I then created an influence map from the images that I found. Influence map After creating the influence map, I then looked into the wood material of the wardrobe and the texture on the lizard. From this, I then creating drawings.  From then I then started to create thumbnail sketches of different wardrobe ideas that were inspired by a lizard. I then selected thumbnail number 2 and progressed it further by adding colour and texture to the design. I linked this ...

Life drawing - Lesson 5

Image
For our first exercise we were given 20 minutes to complete a response to the model with a material of our choice. I chose ink and water again this week as I like the style that I am able to produce with it. As shown, I struggled with proportions.  For this exercise  we were given 5 minutes for each drawing. Our model positioned himself in 5 different poses so that they represented him competing and winning a race. For this exercise I used blue pastel on black paper as I liked the contrast. In the final exercise we were told to focus on the model's facial expressions and on the props that the model was wearing. We were given 10 minutes to complete each response. For this exercise I wanted to experiment further with black ink and water as I found the effect that the water leaves when mixed with the ink very interesting.

Life drawing - Lesson 3

Image
Here is a 20 minute life drawing sketch that I created on white water colour paper using a graphite stick and red and blue coloured pencils. As always, with my first life drawings in the session, my drawing was disproportionate, as shown in the legs and upper body. I did find this exercise beneficial as I was able to use the blue for darker and the red for lighter tones on the body. I was also able to use the direction of the colour to imply that the model is three dimensional.   Here is a 20 minute life drawing that I created on black paper using three different coloured pastels. I found that using three different shades was very beneficial as it allowed me to use a neutral colour as well as a colour for highlights and shadows. Here are my final 10 small sketches from today's life drawing session. Each sketch was completed in between 1 and 5 minutes and was created using a light coloured pastel on black paper. These are my favourite sketches fro...
