From script to screen - Reflective statement

For this project we were given the brief to create an animatic and pre-viz from the three components that we were to be given at the start of the project. My three components were pirate (for the character), hospital (for the location) and battery (as the object). One of the first problems that I encountered at the beginning of the project was that I was thinking too originally with the story ideas that I was presenting to Phil. For example one of my ideas was to have a surgeon who was dressed in a pirate fancy dress costume operating on a patient in order to give the patient a new pacemaker battery. Phil then said in my first OGR that I needed to go into depth with what each component could mean, for example, looking at different objects that could be seen as a battery, which has now helped me look at things differently for future projects. Another issue that I had faced was time management. At the start of the project I believed that I had done a suitable amount of work a...

After my second OGR, Phil gave me the advice to redesign my characters and set to look more cartoon like and inspired by cartoons such as Looney Toons. Here is a quick bit of research that I did looking at Looney Toons cat characters such as Sylvester and Penelope. Here are the thumbnails I created for Dexter: Here is some more research that I did on human Looney Toons characters. I looked at how their noses, eyes, ears and mouths were drawn. Here are the thumbnails that I created for Dr. Brantly:

From script to screen - Character design - Villain and other scientists

Image
Here are some of my character designs for both the villain and other scientists within my story. I haven't decided yet on which of these characters below will be my villain and which of the other characters will be the other scientists. I have also experimented with different eyes for each of the characters to see which I'd prefer.  For these designs I created the skin colours using acrylic paint and then used black Biro pen and coloured pencils to add more details and facial features.
