Character design - Week 8

Image
I started to look more at the environments that my characters were shown to be in. I focused on where the town was based and how big it was in comparison to a human town.

I've decided, with the help of Jordan, that some buildings within my city should be shaped and coloured differently depending on their use. This would allow for the buildings to stand out as well as adopt the glass colours from my artist Dale Chihuly. In 'Lalo' the main feature within the city is the Provence roses at its centre which are encased in glass. Jordan suggested that perhaps the glass surrounding the roses could have a more organic shaping and perhaps replicate certain features of the stem such as the thorns. He also suggested that as the roses were pink, maybe the glass could be coloured the same. He also told me to consider how each of the buildings I am creating could be constructed. I chose for each of the glass buildings to be constructed using small glass panels as it would be easier to create the small curves within the structures. I then considered what other things may be needed in the city, so I looked at how the inhabitants would be able...

Here is a reference for organic shapes that I created in Photoshop. Working in this way has allowed for me to be productive and create new building shapes at a quicker rate with a variety of different outcomes. Here are my 91 - 108 thumbnails. I believe that working with silhouettes as enabled me to create more organically shaped buildings.

'What if?' Metropolis - Thumbnails 27 - 75

Here are my 27 - 75 thumbnail drawings. After my feedback from Phil I looked into Dale Chihuly's painting style as well as his sculptors and incorporated both of these styles into my thumbnail designs. I created these thumbnails using  coloured inks and brio pen.

Here are my first 26 thumbnails for my 'What if?' Metropolis city project. I have chosen to call my city 'Lalo' and each of the drawings of the structures within the city have been inspired by the organic designs shown throughout my artist, Dale Chihuly's, work.

'What if?' Metropolis - Artist research - Dale Chihuly

Image
The artist that I am collaborating with on this project is Dale Chihuly . Chihuly is a glass sculptor who was born in Tacoma, Washington, in the United States. Chihuly's work is inspired by his fascination of botanical gardens. He uses the organic shaping of different plants to design and create glass sculptors and installations of which he exhibits in botanical gardens and museums worldwide.  Shown in the influence map above are images of Chihuly's work. I have looked at each of the images and made notes on Chihuly's influences for each piece, the colours that he uses and sharpness of the edges. I will look at this influence map while creating my thumbnails.
