Perspectives - Postmodernism key terms 1



  1. High modernism - A form of modernity characterised by an unfaltering confidence in science and technology as means to reorder the social and natural world.
  2. Capitalist - An economic system based on the freedom of private ownership of the means of production and their operation for profit. Characteristics central to capitalism include private property, capital accumulation, wage labor, voluntary exchange, a price system, and competitive markets.
  3. Superabundance - A much larger quantity than is needed.
  4. Disconnected - Having a connection broken. (of a person) lacking contact with reality. (of speech, writing, or thought) lacking a logical sequence.
  5. Pop - Like or admired by many people or by a particular person or group and intended for or suited to taste, understanding, or means of the general public rather than specialists or intellectuals.
  6. Fragmentary - Consisting of small disconnected or incomplete parts.
  7. Eclectic nostalgia - Eclectic - Something made from a variety of sources of styles. Nostalgia - A sentimental longing or wistful affection for a period in the past.
  8. Simulacra - An image or representation of someone or something.
  9. Superficiality - lack of thoroughness, depth of character, or serious thought.
  10. Flippant - not showing a serious or respectful attitude.
  11. Fabulation - Describes the large and growing class of mostly 20th century novels that are in a style similar to magical realism, and do not fit into the traditional categories of realism or romance.
  12. Pastiche - An artistic work in a style that imitates that of another work, artist, or period.
  13. Bricolage - (in art or literature) construction or creation from a diverse range of available things.
  14. Aleatory - Depending on the throw of a dice or on chance; random. Relating to or denoting music or other forms of art involving elements of random choice (sometimes using statistical or computer techniques) during their composition, production, or performance.
  15. Depthless - Too deep to be measured. Shallow and superficial.
